Gaza’s population sees 80% displacement

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in the displacement of approximately 80% of the population, or around 1.9 million people, as estimated by UN coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag. Kaag expressed deep concern over reports of new evacuation orders from Khan Yunis during an address to the Security Council. The Israeli military order to evacuate civilians from areas near Khan Yunis, affecting up to 250,000 people, has only worsened the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Kaag emphasized the immense suffering experienced by Palestinian civilians in Gaza, whose lives have been disrupted and homes destroyed by the ongoing conflict. She stressed the urgent need for increased aid to Gaza and the reopening of essential crossings, particularly the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, to prevent a humanitarian disaster. The reduction in aid entering Gaza since the start of the Israeli military operation has only worsened the situation, according to Kaag.

The spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also commented on the evacuation orders, pointing out that displacing such a large portion of the population in Khan Yunis and Rafah governorates will only add to the suffering of civilians. The international community was called upon to provide more funding for relief efforts in Gaza to address the growing crisis.
