The Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) has appointed Kim Ng as a senior advisor, bringing her wealth of knowledge and expertise to the new league. Ng, who made history as MLB’s first female general manager in November 2020, will oversee the development of the AUSL, which is set to start in the spring of 2025.
Ng’s diverse background and experiences in professional sports make her well-positioned to contribute to the success of the AUSL. She played college softball at the University of Chicago and later held positions as an assistant GM with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees before serving as MLB’s senior vice president of baseball operations under Joe Torre. After three seasons with the Miami Marlins, Ng parted ways with the team in October when she declined a mutual option.
The AUSL will kick off with four touring teams and a 30-game season (60 total games) broadcasting on ESPN’s networks. Former players Jessica Mendoza, Cat Osterman, and Natasha Watley are league advisors who will collaborate with Ng on the strategic direction of the AUSL. Plans for expansion are already in place, with the aim for AUSL teams to be established in 6-8 different cities by 2026 in anticipation of softball’s inclusion in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Ng expressed her excitement about joining the movement for women in sports, highlighting her significance as a role model for future generations of female athletes. Her appointment is seen as a step towards gender equality and inclusivity in professional sports, paving the way for more opportunities for women to succeed at all levels of competition.
In conclusion, Kim Ng’s appointment by Athletes Unlimited as a senior advisor is a groundbreaking moment that brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to softball. Her extensive experience and knowledge will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of this exciting new league while promoting gender equality and inclusivity within it.
