The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center has announced that its President and CEO, Dr. Jim Carrington, will be stepping down on July 1, 2025, after leading the organization for 13 years. In a statement, Dr. Carrington expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had during his time at the Center and acknowledged the contributions of its people, partners, and supporters in its success. He emphasized the importance of planning for a smooth transition and the value of new perspectives, ideas, and talents that a new leader can bring to the organization.
Penny Pennington, managing partner at Edward Jones and chair of the Danforth Center Board of Directors, will lead the search for a new President. The search process will involve input from the Danforth Center community as well as stakeholders in the St. Louis region and beyond. Pennington praised Dr. Carrington for his leadership and the growth and impact he has brought to the Center. She emphasized the importance of celebrating Dr. Carrington’s contributions as he nears retirement.
During his tenure as President, Dr. Carrington has overseen significant growth at the Danforth Center. The Center has doubled its staff, expanded its scientific research efforts, developed new facilities such as the William H. Danforth building and field research site in St Charles County, prioritized plant science research initiatives and initiatives to move research products into marketplace including spin-out companies development 39North innovation district.
As he looks towards his retirement date set for July 1st 2025 , Dr Carrington remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition for his successor while supporting opportunities for members of his community.
