In Taranto, Italy, the Smile House Center was established to combat health migration by providing patients with cranio-maxillo-facial malformations with a comprehensive and personalized treatment plan. Located at the Military Hospital Center, this outpatient center of excellence is a result of collaboration between Smile House Fondazione ETS and the Navy, offering support to patients from prenatal diagnosis to the end of treatment.
The center provides a complete care path, starting from prenatal support for parents to the treatment of newborns and adults with cranio-maxillo-facial malformations. The goal is not only to address the physical problem through surgical interventions but also to ensure social integration of patients. In addition to surgical procedures, the center offers complementary services such as orthodontic, speech therapy, and psychological support to limit health migration due to long-term therapies.
Smile House takes territoriality seriously in its approach towards promoting collaboration between regional healthcare networks and national care networks of Smile House Centers. Through training events like “Smile House Project: national network for the treatment of facial malformations,” the foundation works towards training doctors and health workers at Smile House Centers across Italy, ensuring they are up-to-date on best therapies for cranio-maxillo-facial malformations.
What sets Smile House Fondazione ETS apart is its patient care approach that involves identifying malformations, planning treatment paths, and preparing patients and families for the implications associated with these conditions both medically and psychologically. Over 4,000 surgical interventions have been conducted in eight centers across Italy by Smile House Fondazione ETS since its establishment. Nearly 85,000 multidisciplinary consultations have been completed as well. This demonstrates its significance in the field.
Collaboration between Smile House Fondazione ETS and Italian Navy in Taranto signifies a significant step towards creating a network of excellence for diagnosing and treating cranio-maxillo-facial malformations in Italy. Dedication to providing comprehensive care and support reflects their commitment to ensuring wellbeing and social integration of all individuals affected by these conditions.
