The Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger and his wife, Willow Bay, are reportedly considering an investment in Angel City FC, the most valuable franchise in women’s professional sports. Their proposed investment of around $50 million would add to the team’s current valuation of $250 million.
This news was first broken by Puck News and Semafor, with reports suggesting that Iger and Bay will become the team’s controlling shareholders, taking over from Alexis Ohanian. Notable figures from various industries have also shown support for Angel City FC, including Natalie Portman, Serena Williams, Billie Jean King, and Jennifer Garner.
Angel City FC plays its NWSL home games at BMO Stadium on the USC campus near downtown LA, sharing the venue with Major League Soccer’s LAFC. Since its debut in 2022, the team has seen rapid growth alongside the increasing popularity of women’s sports. President Julie Uhrman has expressed optimism about the team’s future, aiming to achieve a billion-dollar valuation within five years.
However, this potential investment comes amidst a crisis that threatened the existence of the NWSL in 2021 due to reports of sexual harassment and misconduct by coaches and former commissioners. Despite requests for comment from representatives for Angel City, Iger and Bay did not respond to Deadline’s inquiries regarding their involvement with this controversial issue.
